How the three formats differ
Decimal degrees (35.681236) express the angle as a decimal number and are used by Google Maps and most web services.
Degrees, minutes, seconds (35°40'52.45") split each degree into 60 minutes and each minute into 60 seconds. Degrees and decimal minutes (35°40.8742') drop the seconds and write the minutes as a decimal; this format is common in marine and aviation navigation.
N and S mark north and south latitude, and E and W mark east and west longitude. In decimal degrees, south and west are negative numbers.
FAQ
- Which formats can I enter?
- Decimal degrees such as "35.681236, 139.767125", DMS such as "35°40'52.45"N 139°46'1.65"E", DDM such as "35°40.8742'N 139°46.0275'E", and plain numbers separated by spaces (35 40 52.45 139 46 1.65).
- Does it convert between datums, such as the old Tokyo Datum?
- No. It only changes the format and treats every value as WGS 84. Coordinates from older Japanese maps or documents (before 2002) may use the Tokyo Datum and can be several hundred meters off from WGS 84.
- Is anything I enter sent anywhere?
- No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser.
