Add Page Numbers to PDF Free

Adds a page number to every page of a PDF. Choose the position, numbering style, size, and starting page.

To skip numbering a cover page, set "Start numbering from page" to 2 or more.

About this tool

A cover page or table of contents can be skipped by starting the numbering from a later page.

This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your files are never uploaded to our server.

When to use it

Useful before printing and handing out meeting materials, proposals, papers, or reports — once pages are numbered, it is easy to say "see the table on page 3" when explaining something.

Also useful after merging several PDFs together, when you want one continuous set of page numbers across the combined file.

How to use

  1. Drop the PDF you want to number, or click to choose it.
  2. Choose the position, style, and font size. To skip a cover page, change "Start numbering from page"; to start counting from a number other than 1, change "First number".
  3. Check the preview, then click "Add numbers and download".

Skipping a cover page or table of contents

For example, if page 1 is a cover and you want page 2 to be numbered "1", set "Start numbering from page" to 2 and "First number" to 1.

With the "1 / 10" style, the second number (the total) is calculated from how many pages actually get a number, not the total page count of the PDF.

FAQ

What happens with landscape or rotated pages?
The number is placed at the position you chose (such as bottom center) and oriented so it reads upright, matching how the page actually looks even if the page is rotated.
Does this change the rest of the content in my PDF?
No. Only the page number text is added; the existing text and images are untouched. The original file is not overwritten — the numbered version is saved as a new file.
Is the PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. Adding the page numbers happens entirely in your browser.
