Markdown Editor Free

Write Markdown and see it rendered as you type, including tables and checkboxes. Copy the result as HTML.

About this tool

What you write is saved automatically in your browser, so you can continue where you left off next time you open the page.

The preview strips unsafe tags and attributes, such as scripts, before rendering.

This tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to our server.

When to use it

Useful for drafting a README, a GitHub-flavored comment or pull request description, documentation, or any text you want to check the formatting of before pasting it somewhere else.

How to use

  1. Write Markdown in the "Edit" panel (on a phone, switch between "Edit" and "Preview").
  2. The "Preview" panel updates as you type.
  3. Copy the result as Markdown, copy it as HTML, or save it as a .md file.

Markdown basics

Start a line with "# " for a heading ("## " for a subheading), "- " for a bullet list, or "1. " for a numbered list. Use **text** for bold and [text](URL) for a link.

Use "- [ ] " for a checkbox and "> " for a quote. Wrap text in ``` for a code block. For a table, write a row of "| Heading | Heading |", a row of "| --- | --- |" below it, then the data rows.

How line breaks are handled

With "Treat line breaks as line breaks" turned on, every line break you type becomes a line break in the preview (the same behavior as GitHub comments). When it is turned off, a new paragraph starts only where you leave a blank line, the same as a GitHub README.

FAQ

Is what I write saved anywhere?
It's saved automatically in this browser's local storage so you can continue later. Nothing is sent to our server. If your Markdown includes an image link, the preview loads that image from the site that hosts it. Clearing your browser data also clears the saved text, so save anything important as a .md file.
What happens if I type an HTML tag?
Safe tags, such as headings and tables, are rendered. Scripts and attributes that run code, such as onerror, are removed before rendering.
I pressed "Clear" by mistake.
Press "Undo", which appears right after clearing, to restore the text.
